Dee Sparling's Bio BORN INTO THE BORDER-CULTURE of the Greater Detroit/Windsor area, Dee Sparling has been fascinated with maps, countries, cultures, international boundaries and political geography from a very young age. Her ongoing pursuit of this interest eventually took her through an intensive and dedicated study of History at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada.
Her undergraduate programme began with comprehensive coursework in intellectual history, world religions, and comparative/international politics. This was enriched with extensive study of American, British, and Canadian histories, as well as significant examination of Russia, the twentieth-century German experience and the intellectual history of Japan. The successful completion of her B.A. also included several courses in philosophy and ethics.
Dee completed her M.A. at Queen's University in 1995, specializing in the political and social history of the United States, and focusing on the political and cultural disintegration of the antebellum republic in the decade preceding the Civil War. Areas of study and research included
the factors influencing party loyalty and realignment (in relation to sectionalism, Northern antislavery activism, and growing Southern nationalism)
the economic and social foundations of American race relations
the causes and manifestations of political radicalism and Southern separatism
a biographically-oriented study of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas and their political personae
the historiographical analysis of four major schools of inquiry as they pertain to these aspects of the American experience
Her successful dissertation, entitled "Second-Guessing the American Civil War: A Reassessment of Revisionism and `Repressibility'," was described by committee examiners as "well-thought, well-written," and "unusually provocative, intelligent, and polished." Supplemented with coursework in the legacy of coerced-labour systems in the Atlantic world, as well as in the history of American foreign relations and diplomacy, Dee's postgraduate work has given her a keen grasp of the forces which affect stability on both the national and international levels.
The "Internet craze" finally caught up with Dee in a serious way in the spring of 2000. Learning HTML and Web design became a self-assigned project. The result is SepSecIntelligence - a gift to herself and to the online political research community.
A Canadian citizen, she understands fully the impact that regionalism and separatism can have on one's sense of citizenship, rights and responsibilities, particularly within a federated state. The challenge of understanding, managing and resolving these conflicts can be met only with a disciplined approach to research and communication, a careful balancing of short-term versus long-term objectives with realistic options, and a strong commitment to ethical solutions.
DEE SPARLING IS available for independent consultation, custom-designed seminars and staff/executive briefings, or for contracted research assignments -- an ideal source of expertise for policy designers, information managers and researchers working in government, corporate and media environments. Her approach is friendly and people-oriented, with a firm commitment to results at reasonable rates.
